Interior Designers Vs. Interior Decorators
One of the common misconceptions about Interior Design is that Interior Design is all about décor and color…
Its called a common misconception for a reason, as it happens quite often. At least 8 out of 10 people refer to me & my collogues as interior decorators. They, just like many others, don’t know any better. Thus, I wanted to write an entire blog to get this message out & explain the difference. Let me start by telling you that referring to an “interior designer” by an” interior decorator” is like referring to a “doctor” by a “nurse”.
A lot of the times those two professions overlap, and in the interior design world, any construction or renovation job is not as complete until the final decor touches are done. Which is why its a little bit harder to differentiate between the two. But here is the two explained to give you an idea before you decide to hire one or the other.

What is Interior Decoration all about?
There are many resources and programs available to become an Interior Decorator which mainly focus on aesthetics and surface looks of spaces. Such learning materials provide in depth learning material on space layouts, planning, fabric color and texture, furniture trends and styles. Interior Decorators often have a natural passion for fashion and décor and admire using their artistic sense to create the final masterpiece. This all comes in after the architectural, structural planning and renovations take place.
To be a successful decorator, it is very important to portray skill and artistic vision. It is also key for decorators to have strong relationships with furniture professionals and fellow decorators as they work very closely together. But, do you ever wonder- If an Interior Decorator is designated to architecturally plan interiors and create surface looks of the space? Who is really capable of designing the structural build out and determining whether or not an architectural design project is feasible?

This is when Interior Design kicks in! At the very beginning of the planning of a project.
Having a desire and passion for design and architecture is definitely important when becoming an Interior Designer. However, one of the main must haves that Interior Designers are required to obtain is educational credentials.
Interior Designers- as the title states, are responsible for the creation of the entire interior of a space. From structural, to plans and drawings, to the final touches of furnishings and placements of décor. Designers plan and execute the interior from start to finish. They play a vital role in working closely with architects, builders and contractors, and play an essential role in having the entire team aligned on one vision, which is the final desired outcome for their client. Designers ensure that they utilize realistic designs that are functional and align with the architectural build of the space while all elments coordinate throughout the floor plans.
